What is 'Organic food'?
What is 'Organic food'?
The term organic not only refers to the food itself, but how it is produced. Organic food production is based on a system of farming that maintains and replenishes soil fertility and health.
Healthy Soil = Healthy Food = Healthy People
Organic foods are produced without the use of synthetic chemicals and fertilisers. Organic foods are minimally processed to maintain the integrity of the food without artificial ingredients, preservatives or irradiation.
What are the levels of Organic classification?
There are two common levels of certification between the certifying bodies:-
Level A - Certified Organic
Grown using appropriate land management practices that are regenerative and in harmony with nature. These practices avoid the use of artificial fertilisers, herbicides, pesticides, growth regulators, antibiotics, hormone stimulants or intensive livestock systems and must have been in practice for a minimum of three years.
Level B Certified in Conversion
Similar to “Certified Organic” except that the farmer has been farming organically for less than three years or has not yet achieved the dynamic ecosystem required for Level A certification. During this period full organic standards must be practiced.
